Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to 'a wonderful faraway place'. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years.

"Going Solo" setzt dort ein, wo "Boy" aufhört, nämlich nach Dahls Schulabschluss. Statt zu studieren, geht Dahl zu einer Ölfirma, die ihn bald nach Ostafrika schickt. Dahls Reise nach Tansania und seine Erlebnisse in Afrika arbeiten zum einen die Exzentrizitäten der dortigen Briten (und auch der Einheimischen) mit sehr viel Humor heraus, zum anderen erwacht Afrika zum Leben. So hat mich Dahls Angst vor Schlangen mitgerissen, die Geschichte vom Schlangenflüsterer, der die Mamba im Haus fangen soll, war super spannend und beängstigend. Am brillantesten fand ich die Story vom Löwen, der die Frau des Kochs verschleppt - und die die erste Geschichte ist, die Dahl an eine Zeitung verkauft.Mit dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs schafft Dahl den Spagat zwischen seinem heiteren Erzählton und der schrecklichen Realität des Krieges. Trotz seiner physischen Größe wird Dahl Kampfflieger mit Einsätzen im Nahen Osten und Griechenland. Seine Kritik an den Einsatzbefehlen und der Strategie der britischen Militärführung insbesondere in Griechenland wird deutlich, wo er und seine Kameraden von einer aussichtslosen Lage ins nächste Desaster geschickt wurden. Auch hier ist Dahl mit (oder trotz) all seiner Kritik ein klug reflektierter Erzähler.Mich hat "Going Solo" gefesselt. Roald Dahl hat vieles erlebt als junger Mann, Schönes und Schreckliches, und es in diesen Erzählungen mitreißend verewigt. 5 Sterne.PS. Das englischsprachige Hörbuch ist (wie schon "Boy") sehr gut gelesen von Dan Stevens.
The book is well written and interesting, but surprisingly "happy-go-lucky". It gives a detailed account of Roald Dahl's experiences as a pilot in WWII, and it also gives a psychologically interesting and somewhat scary account of how a young man can find war to be non-problematic and adventurous. Not the best book by Roald Dahl, but well worth reading for those interested in flying and looking for a personal account of the life and near-death of a pilot.
I used to love Roald Dahl as a little girl, and now, as a 25 year old, I want to read his Autobiography again :-)
Reibungslose abwickilung und punktliche Ablieferung. Ein Englische Sprachige buch aber ist einfach und Verständlich für Schulkinder, sehr Empfehlenwert für Kinder.
I love Roald Dahl's books. And I really hope Dan Stevens could read much much more books for us in the future.
Die Fortsetzung der Autobiographie, die mit "Boy" begann. Wenn man dieses Buch liest, wird klar, warum Roald Dahl seine Lebensgeschichte in zwei Teilen schrieb, ein Teil von der Kindheit bis zum Erwachsenwerden, dieser zweite Teil über seine Zeit danach: Der zweite Teil behandelt die Kriegszeit und ist etwas ernster. Der Umschlag sagt "ab 12 Jahre" und das kommt sicherlich hin.Roald Dahl arbeitet für Shell in Afrika, lernt fliegen und wird im 2. Weltkrieg Kampfpilot. Wie immer schreibt er sehr anschaulich und lebendig, und trotz der schwierigen Verhältnisse gibt es genug Situationskomik. Über die politischen Verhältnisse macht er sich nicht viel Gedanken, er nimmt die Dinge so wie sie kommen.Das Buch ist spannend vom Anfang bis zum Ende. Roald Dahl verrät im Buch auch seinen Trick, wie er es schafft, solche Bücher zu schreiben: Er hat einfach alles Langweilige weggelassen.Es gibt noch zahlreiche andere englische Ausgaben dieses Buchs bei Amazon, mit weiteren Rezensionen. Die preiswerte Penguin-Ausgabe hat einen hübsch gestalteten Umschlag, aber der Text ist sehr bescheiden gedruckt. Die Buchstaben sind oft etwas verwischt, aber lesbar.
In this autobiographical book, Roald Dahl fully plays his role as a contemporary witness, providing all people about a lot of information on how living was at that time, i. e. living in Africa at that pre-war time and, of course, taking part in RAF operations during WW II. These memories are as ususal seasoned with his trademark humour and really take the reader to all the places visited by Roald Dahl, as if one would just look over his shoulder.
